Air and Vapor Barriers for Southern Buildings By: Wagdy A. Y. Anis, AIA; Rick Quirouette; Jacques Rousseau
Investigations of building envelope problems have led many building science consultants, investigators and researchers to conclude that air leakage is the leading cause of moisture problems in exterior building envelopes. These problems include mold and mildew in exterior walls,
excessive rain penetration into wall cavities, poor indoor temperature and humidity control, high air conditioning costs and compromised noise, fire and smoke control measures. In colder climates the problems of air leakage include icicles on exterior facades, spalling of masonry, premature corrosion of metal parts in exterior walls, high wood moisture contents and rot, excessive rain penetration and indoor temperature and humidity control problems. >> Read More

Subject: Vapor Retarders for High Humidity, Cold Storage and other Special
Use Buildings
Condensation of water vapor within a roof system has long been known in the roofing
industry to be a detriment to roof system performance. The transformation of water vapor
into liquid water happens when water vapor cools to its dew point and condenses. This can
happen as a result of temperature differences between a roof deck and the membrane
surface, creating a “vapor drive” that moves water vapor to a point where it can cool and
condense into liquid water within the roof system. Liquid water in the roof system degrades
thermal insulation, diminishes its thermal nsulating properties, corrodes metal fasteners,
and attacks other parts of the roof system.
To preserve a Firestone warranty and protect roof systems on freezers, cold storage, high
humidity and other special use facilities, Firestone recommends a vapor retarder that has
been designed by a recognized roofing industry design professional. A properly designed
and installed vapor retarder prevents water from getting into the roof system, helping to
ensure the integrity of the roof.
Firestone reminds its valued customers that installation specifications state:
The determination of the necessity for and location of a vapor retarder or an air barrier are project specific requirements that are the responsibility of the building owner or
his/her design professional. The proper assessment of the building, the need for, and the
design of, an air barrier and/or a vapor retarder are critical to the long-term performance
of any roofing system. Firestone does not review or conduct dew point analyses and
therefore does not accept responsibility for damage due to recurrence rate or location of
the dew point. Although some projects do not require a vapor retarder, a design review
is recommended for all projects.
